So, the thrifting gods were benevolent enough to deliver the perfect 1920s fem Crowley (Good Omens) shoes to me. And then they fell apart the first time I got to wear them. As thrifted shoes occasionally do, due to excessive wear and dry rot. So…I decided to save them! 1) Tape off any parts that aren't peeling you want to keep. 2) Use a wire brush to scrape off the plastic and glue layers of the vinyl to reveal the canvas underneath. Try to brush the same direction as any stitching to reduce thread damage. Notice, any areas you don't get completely clean will paint up with a different texture and will require more layers of paint to cover/smooth. 3) Use a 2:1 mixture of the acrylic paint of your choice and fabric medium to paint the fabric areas. One coat worked for me. 4) Touch up scuffed spots on the vinyl bits you kept with leather paint. 5) Let dry. (glue fleece inside on the spots that rub) Wear. It isn't con without a crunch. But these inro boxes for our Edo Period Good Omens Crowley and Aziraphale cosplays were totally worth cutting down on sleep to finish. The carved netsuke were purchased and altered, but the boxes are made out of PVC pipe, heated and crushed, then cut apart and fitted with cut up steel drinking straws to guide the cords. Then painted. For so many hours…but Aziraphale's cloud inro might be one of the prettiest things I've ever made. Just spent a week unnecessarily embroidering a panel for Crowley's Edo Period haori coat…because I'm me. Thought you might like to see a snapshot of the process. Basically I pick an image, mess with it in Photoshop, trace it using tracing paper, and spend all my free time embroidering as though possessed til it's done. Easy peasy.
